Sometimes I do talk about the slippery associative aspects of pop music, but it's often hard. As in, I don't want to make the class about my own likes/dislikes, so when I introduce that topic, I want to make sure that it's about something that we all do (and not about my irrational hatred for concept albums).

I think you'd be a better person than I to talk about this, though! Want to do a guest spot sometime this semester?

Dude, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Alanis. It sounds utterly dorky, but she got me through some rough times.

Do you ever engage this slippery dimension of pop music with your students?--Y'know, the tendency to love (or hate) something simply because it's related to a specific time, person, or place in your life? A love/hate that (presumably) transcends the actual aesthetics of the music? Is it fair to think of that kind of fandom/devotion/hatred as still being enough "about the music" to justify discussing it in a pop music class (versus a psych or perception or music therapy class, for instance)?

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this, because if/when I ever teach pop music, I'd love to make this topic a centerpiece of the course.

Agent_M: "David Bowie, whatevs"??? Heresy! Dude, everything from, like, The Man Who Sold The World through Young Americans is awesome. After that, admittedly, he went a little crap. But still!

With you on Freddie, though.

Graeme: I always thought Freddie Mercury was gay, but that's because my early exposure to Three's Company reruns gave me an inkling as to what the term meant.

Agent_M: Ah, there will someday be another "RH, WILO" on Queen!

About Freddie Mercury's sexuality: I remember being surprised when I found out that he was gay, which I seem to remember being a big deal in the newspapers after he died - Looking back on it, I have no idea *why* I would have ever assumed he was straight, but apparently I was a very stupid child.
